Many of you have been touched by cancer - knowing someone who has experienced cancer, maybe yourself, or having lost loved ones and friends. October has been designated to bring awareness to breast cancer, but really its about all people going through cancer.
This is the month I remember my Dad. He was a great Dad, and like many Dads, wanted "security" for me. He tried to convince me that a career like IT professional or accountant might be the way. But we shared a strong interest in natural health, and he knew that made me happy, so he encouraged me to open my little spa instead.
When he was diagnosed with cancer, there were lots of appointments, tests, unpleasant treatments, in addition to long waits, paperwork and other hassles. He bore it all with great patience and grace, and did his part to get better, but lost the battle as the cancer spread and the treatments weakened him.
Through the pain of standing by rather helplessly, I had to find something positive in this experience or I’d lose my mind. Without even trying, since I was in too much pain to try, the blessings came to me -
*a greater sense of compassion since suffering is a part of all our lives;
*an appreciation for the short time we have here since the length if time is not guaranteed;
*getting to spend more time with my Dad and helped him realize his final wish;
*finding a greater level of understanding about the power of touch - how it can help heal, energize and bring someone to a better place, even when they are not feeling well.
I was surprised to find that there are very few places that provide the respite of spa to someone with cancer, and even fewer that teach professionals how to do this work.
So I invested in a specialized training by Morag Currin’s Touch for Cancer and am now certified in Clinical Oncology Esthetics® (COE). I underwent extensive training in understanding how cancer and the treatments affect the skin and lymphatic system, and what role I could play to ease some of the related discomforts for cancer patients. The program explored the side effects of cancer therapies, how those are further compounded by various medications and the importance of proper sanitation to support weakened immune systems. Certification also required me to pass exams on how to develop treatment plans and perform gentle, yet effective massage and esthetic protocols using compatible skin care ingredients and techniques.
Its been a great relief to safely help my clients who are diagnosed and going through cancer treatments relax, reduce pain, ease skin and nail discomforts associated with cancer treatments, feel pampered, beautiful and empowered. See my Oncology Massage and Skincare page for details.
One of my customers lost her Mom to cancer and when she found out that I offer this type of spa service she said, "I wish I would have known you then so I could have brought Mom for something so peaceful and healing. The only appointments my Mom had for 7 months were doctor appointments... it would have helped to give her some positive touch."
If you know someone who is in need, please note that the cost is never an issue with this work as I work on sliding scale for cancer patients. I welcome them whatever stage or condition they’re in, and strive to provide a peaceful, comfortable, safe place where they feel nurtured, validated, cared for and heard. I’m happy to discuss all protocols with the patient, her caregivers or her medical providers.
Thanks Dad, you continue to inspire me. I miss you…
As the seasons change, your skin care needs change as well. Trees shed their leaves; healthy skin sheds its outer layer efficiently to develop the barrier needed for cooler temperatures. Is your skin healthy?
After summer’s activities (sun, swimming, etc), skin needs some TLC. Tans are fading leaving dull, blotchy skin. Skin feels parched, leaving it exposed to greater wrinkling and irritation. Your professional skin care visit this fall addresses these issues.
To help skin look even-toned, hold adequate moisture and efficiently turn over to reveal new skin cells, I use safe resurfacing treatments made of organic ripe pumpkins, apples and berries. These have high levels of nourishing vitamins (A & C), plus natural sugars and enzymes that remove dead skin cells without harsh chemicals. Results - reduction of fine lines and wrinkles; fading of dark spots; better hydration and absorption of nutrients; clearing and tightening of pores; boosting radiance.
Schedule your visit now to ease your transition into fall.
