Since many of my massage and skincare clients suffer from chronic anxiety, I’m sure this week’s events have caused more anxiety, disturbed sleep, worry, etc., even for those who don’t normally suffer from anxiety. Feeling anxious can be quite uncomfortable. Although this emotion gives us useful information from a mental health standpoint that we shouldn’t ignore, there are times when we need to just get through the day before we can process emotions. When you don't wish to turn to medication, square breathing is a useful tool. Here’s how to do it;
Note: do not do this while standing, driving or any other activity that requires your concentration. This technique can also cause mild dizziness if you’ve been breathing in a shallow manner all day, which is why its best to sit.
It works because you feel more in control, even of a little thing like breath; you’re slowing down and focusing; more oxygen is sent to the brain, and the heart rate slows.
This is good for most stressful, anxious situations, or when sleep is disrupted and your mind is racing in the middle of the night. Teach it to your kids who may suffer from test anxiety - it will help them focus and be calmer.
I wish you greater calmness in the days ahead, and hope this tool will be helpful to you and your loved ones.
